API ProFleet installs mobile data terminals, rugged laptops and tablet docks in police cars, fire apparatus, ambulances and utility trucks across Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Every mount, dock, power feed and antenna is fitted clear of the airbags and the driver's controls, and tested before the vehicle goes back in service.
A mobile data terminal, or MDT, is the rugged computer or screen mounted in a work vehicle that crews use to receive calls, look up information and file reports without going back to the office.
In a patrol car it shows dispatched calls, runs plate and license checks and files reports from the roadside. On fire apparatus and ambulances it carries routes, building preplans and patient care reports. In utility and public works trucks it holds work orders, maps and asset records. Today most MDTs are rugged laptops or tablets that drop into a docking station, rather than the fixed terminals of years past, and they usually work alongside CAD/AVL and an in-vehicle router.
Within the driver's reach and sight, but out of every airbag deployment path and clear of the shifter, the controls and the driver's view of the road.
Mount manufacturers are blunt about it: equipment and wiring must never sit in the deployment path of an airbag. In a crash, a laptop in that path becomes a projectile. So the mount usually goes on a pedestal in the center console with an arm or slide that angles the screen toward the driver, and it is sized to the specific vehicle model. The computer locks into its dock so it cannot come loose over a curb or in a pursuit, and every cable is routed away from pedals, seat tracks and the seat-belt path.
Power, antennas and data: the dock charges the computer, passes its radios through to roof antennas, and connects it to the vehicle's router and accessories.
We dock and undock the computer, confirm it charges, connects through the router and picks up GPS, and check that every accessory on the dock works.
We also sit in the driver's seat and check the screen is readable and reachable without blocking the road view or a mirror. Each vehicle is photographed and recorded against its unit number and VIN. Every install follows the same written standard behind every API ProFleet rollout. See everything we install on large fleets.
Yes. We fit the pedestal, the arm or slide, the docking station and the wiring, so the computer drops into the dock and everything works without a loose cable in the cab.
Often, yes. Many pedestals and arms stay in the vehicle and only the docking station changes to fit the new computer. We check what can stay before quoting new hardware.
Yes. Tablet docks mount the same way, with the same attention to airbag zones, sight lines and power.
Yes. We remove the mount, dock and wiring from the old vehicle and install them in the new one, and patch the holes we leave behind.
