Warning Why not just plug it straight into the OBD-II port?

Plugging a GPS tracking device directly into the factory OBD-II port may save money initially, but it can create significantly more expensive problems later.

In our years of field experience, we have encountered numerous vehicles where an exposed GPS device was accidentally kicked, struck, or pulled, resulting in damage to the factory OBD-II port or surrounding components. Repairs to this connection can be costly, particularly when dealership service is required.

There is also a significant security and tracking concern. When a GPS device is plugged directly into an accessible OBD-II port, a driver or anyone with access to the vehicle can simply unplug it — immediately defeating the purpose of the tracking system.

This harness lets the GPS device be securely connected and concealed behind the dash while keeping the factory diagnostic connection available.

A small savings during installation can lead to costly repairs, lost tracking, and unnecessary downtime. A properly installed Y-Split Harness helps prevent all three.

How do I know which Y-cable I need?

16-pin OBD-II is the trapezoid connector under the dash on light-duty trucks, vans and cars. 9-pin J1939 is the round Deutsch connector on heavy trucks: green is Type 1, black is Type 2 at 500k baud. 6-pin J1708 is the older round connector still found on plenty of working equipment. If you are not sure, take a photo of the port and email it to info@apisignalcorp.com.

Do I need a Y-cable at all?

You need one any time a device plugs into the diagnostic port and the customer still wants that port usable. A shop that cannot plug in a scan tool because our device is in the way is a callback waiting to happen. On heavy trucks it is not optional.
