How do I know which Y-cable I need?

16-pin OBD-II is the trapezoid connector under the dash on light-duty trucks, vans and cars. 9-pin J1939 is the round Deutsch connector on heavy trucks: green is Type 1, black is Type 2 at 500k baud. 6-pin J1708 is the older round connector still found on plenty of working equipment. If you are not sure, take a photo of the port and text it to us.

Do I need a Y-cable at all?

You need one any time a device plugs into the diagnostic port and the customer still wants that port usable. A shop that cannot plug in a scan tool because our device is in the way is a callback waiting to happen. On heavy trucks it is not optional.
