A digger derrick earns its keep drilling holes and setting poles, and most of that time the truck is parked. We wire a digger derrick's equipment into its GPS tracker so you can see when the auger and boom were working, where, and for how long, across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

On a utility job the truck sits in one spot for hours, so a GPS tracker shows one long stop. Monitoring the equipment breaks that stop down into the work: outriggers set, auger turning, boom lifting a pole, then everything stowed again. The platform shows each with a time, at that location.
That gives utility contractors a record of work per site, and gives the shop accurate hours on equipment that wears by use, not by miles.
The auger, the boom, the winch and the outriggers on a digger derrick all run on hydraulics. The hydraulic pump is driven by the truck's engine through a power take-off, or PTO. PTO monitoring wires the PTO engaged signal into the tracking device, so every time the hydraulics are running, the platform records it.
There are a few ways to give the tracking device a reliable on and off signal, and the right one depends on the truck:
On a digger derrick the most useful additions are a boom stowed switch and outrigger switches, because driving off with either one out is a serious risk. We meter every signal before wiring it, and truck-side wire colors are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.
We work the equipment on site: PTO on and off, outriggers down and up, boom out and stowed, and confirm the platform shows each one before the truck goes back to work. For bucket trucks and aerial lifts, see our boom lift telematics page, and see PTO and equipment integration for other trucks.
